    An integrated theory of language production and comprehension

    Currently, production and comprehension are regarded as quite distinct in accounts of language processing. In rejecting this dichotomy, we instead assert that producing and understanding are interwoven, and that this interweaving is what enables people to predict themselves and each other. We start by noting that production and comprehension are forms of action and action perception. We then consider the evidence for interweaving in action, action perception, and joint action, and explain such evidence in terms of prediction. Specifically, we assume that actors construct forward models of their actions before they execute those actions, and that perceivers of others' actions covertly imitate those actions, then construct forward models of those actions. We use these accounts of action, action perception, and joint action to develop accounts of production, comprehension, and interactive language. Importantly, they incorporate well-defined levels of linguistic representation (such as semantics, syntax, and phonology). We show (a) how speakers and comprehenders use covert imitation and forward modeling to make predictions at these levels of representation, (b) how they interweave production and comprehension processes, and (c) how they use these predictions to monitor the upcoming utterances. We show how these accounts explain a range of behavioral and neuroscientific data on language processing and discuss some of the implications of our proposal

    Background: The most significant source of background in direct dark matter searches are neutrons that scatter elastically from nuclei in the detector's sensitive volume. Experimental data for the elastic scattering cross section of neutrons from argon and neon, which are target materials of interest to the dark matter community, were previously unavailable. Purpose: Measure the differential cross section for elastic scattering of neutrons from argon and neon in the energy range relevant to backgrounds from (alpha,n) reactions in direct dark matter searches. Method: Cross-section data were taken at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) using the neutron time-of-flight technique. These data were fit using the spherical optical model. Results: The differential cross section for elastic scatting of neutrons from neon at 5.0 and 8.0 MeV and argon at 6.0 MeV was measured. Optical-model parameters for the elastic scattering reactions were determined from the best fit to these data. The total elastic scattering cross section for neon was found to differ by 6% at 5.0 MeV and 13% at 8.0 MeV from global optical-model predictions. Compared to a local optical-model for 40Ar, the elastic scattering cross section was found to differ from the data by 8% at 6.0 MeV. Conclusions: These new data are important for improving Monte-Carlo simulations and background estimates for direct dark matter searches and for benchmarking optical models of neutron elastic scattering from these nuclei

    Lymphocyte Activators Elicit Bovine Leukemia Virus Expression Differently as Asymptomatic Infection Progresses

    AbstractSince bovine leukemia virus (BLV) replicates in B-lymphocytes, viral expression and production should respond to agents activating these cells. We asked whether synthesis of BLV capsid (CA) protein and production of infectious virus would increase when peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from infected sheep were stimulated in short-term culture with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a polyclonal activator of B-cells, and compared its effects with those of phytohemagglutinin (PHA), a lymphocyte activator known to increase BLV expression. LPS treatment of PBMCs from asymptomatic sheep that had been infected for 1–4 years increased the number of cells synthesizing CA protein, the amount of CA protein per cell, and the number of PBMCs acting as infectious centers. LPS derived from several different microbes was effective. During the ensuing 4 years of asymptomatic infection, the number of PBMCs expressing virus under minimal stimulation increased for each animal. The ability of LPS to recruit additional cells to express CA protein remained constant or decreased in magnitude, yet at the same time, lower concentrations of LPS were required to elicit a maximal effect. This suggests that the cellular pathways affected by LPS are endogenously more activated as infection progresses. PHA initially stimulated fewer cells to synthesize BLV CA protein than LPS did although the amount of CA protein synthesized per cell was greater with PHA. As infection progressed, PHA surpassed LPS in the numbers of PBMCs induced to express CA protein. This suggests that the cellular pathways affected by PHA become more responsive to its effects as infection progresses. LPS increased CA expression early and transiently during culture whereas the PHA-mediated increase continued to develop for several days. Thus, LPS increases BLV expression but does so differently than PHA. Moreover, these longitudinal results show that the activation state of BLV-infected cells changes as asymptomatic infection progresses

    Doping of a One-Dimensional Mott Insulator: Photoemision and Optical Studies of Sr2_2CuO3+δ_{3+\delta}

    The spectral properties of a one-dimensional (1D) single-chain Mott insulator Sr2_2CuO3_{3} have been studied in angle-resolved photoemission and optical spectroscopy, at half filling and with small concentrations of extra charge doped into the chains via high oxygen pressure growth. The single- particle gap is reduced with oxygen doping, but the metallic state is not reached. The bandwidth of the charge-transfer band increases with doping, while the state becomes narrower, allowing unambiguous observation of separated spinon and holon branches in the doped system. The optical gap is not changed upon doping, indicating that a shift of chemical potential rather than decrease of corelation gap is responsible for the apparent reduction of the photoemission gap.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Survival prediction in mesothelioma using a scalable lasso regression model: instructions for use and initial performance using clinical predictors

    Introduction: Accurate prognostication is difficult in malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). We developed a set of robust computational models to quantify the prognostic value of routinely available clinical data, which form the basis of published MPM prognostic models. Methods: Data regarding 269 patients with MPM were allocated to balanced training (n=169) and validation sets (n=100). Prognostic signatures (minimal length best performing multivariate trained models) were generated by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression for overall survival (OS), OS <6 months and OS <12 months. OS prediction was quantified using Somers DXY statistic, which varies from 0 to 1, with increasing concordance between observed and predicted outcomes. 6-month survival and 12-month survival were described by area under the curve (AUC) scores. Results: Median OS was 270 (IQR 140–450) days. The primary OS model assigned high weights to four predictors: age, performance status, white cell count and serum albumin, and after cross-validation performed significantly better than would be expected by chance (mean DXY0.332 (±0.019)). However, validation set DXY was only 0.221 (0.0935–0.346), equating to a 22% improvement in survival prediction than would be expected by chance. The 6-month and 12-month OS signatures included the same four predictors, in addition to epithelioid histology plus platelets and epithelioid histology plus C-reactive protein (mean AUC 0.758 (±0.022) and 0.737 (±0.012), respectively). The <6-month OS model demonstrated 74% sensitivity and 68% specificity. The <12-month OS model demonstrated 63% sensitivity and 79% specificity. Model content and performance were generally comparable with previous studies. Conclusions: The prognostic value of the basic clinical information contained in these, and previously published models, is fundamentally of limited value in accurately predicting MPM prognosis. The methods described are suitable for expansion using emerging predictors, including tumour genomics and volumetric staging
